At least 20 people have died in landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains in the Indian city of Mumbai, authorities said Sunday.

Seventeen people died and two others were injured after a wall collapsed early Sunday morning on several houses in a neighborhood in the Mahul area, according to the National Disaster Response Force. The wounded were recovering in a hospital.

In another incident, three people were killed in the Vikhroli neighborhood after half a dozen huts at the base of a hill collapsed on top of each other on Saturday night. Dozens of rescuers were searching the rubble for at least 15 people who were likely trapped.

Monsoon rains have flooded various parts of Mumbai, the capital of India's entertainment and financial industry. Train services in the city have also been affected.

Landslides caused by landslides are common in India during the monsoon season, when downpours weaken the foundations of flimsy structures.

The monsoon lasts in the region between June and September. Rains are crucial for crops planted during the season, but often cause a lot of damage.
