A
team of RAB-7 went to the area on Sunday to rescue illegal trees and attacked
the RAB members by announcing 'robbers have come' from the microphone of a
local mosque.
Speaking
to eyewitnesses of the incident, it was learned that RAB went on an operation
after receiving information that there were illegal timber stocks in Bolirhat
area. Forest department officials were also taken along. Local traders became
enraged when the forest department officials started sorting out the papers.
Four
RAB members were injured in the attack. They have been admitted to Chittagong
Medical College Hospital, said Nurul Absar, media officer of RAB-7.
He
said, "Based on secret information, we came to know that there is a
stockpile of illegally smuggled timber in the Balirhat area of Bakula."
Later, RAB members launched an operation with the officials of the forest
department. The RAB team went on the operation in the afternoon. '‘During the
operation, some local RAB members intervened and at one point, the mike of the
mosque, referring to the RAB as robbers, told the residents to gather. After
this announcement, the miscreants started attacking the RAB members with sticks
and throwing stones. 4 RAB members were injured. After that additional RAB went
and brought the situation under control.
Naik
Hamidur Rahman of Chamek Hospital police outpost said four injured RAB members
were brought to the hospital around 4 pm. They are undergoing treatment.
The
Officer-in-charge of Bakalia Police Station Ruhul Amin said, "We have been
informed that the RAB is conducting an operation in Balirhat, but we have not
been informed about the details there."
Meanwhile,
a RAB official said 15 people have been
detained since the incident on Sunday afternoon. They are being interrogated.
The raid is still ongoing. Details will be announced after the end of the raid.
