Food security most pressing issue: PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today said food security is surely the most pressing issue for the people in Asia and the Pacific region.

She was virtually addressing the inaugural session of the meeting of ministers in the 36th Regional Conference for Asia and the Pacific of the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The premier said the Covid-19 pandemic has revealed how the human being is in the face of such disaster and it has also revealed how the human can face the challenges together.

"There are about 305.7 million people in South Asia, who still suffer from hunger. We can arrange food for them if we make our sincere effort," she said. The prime minister also placed a four-point proposal for ensuring food security in the Asian and Pacific regions.

Those include collaboration among countries of the region in agriculture research and education should be enhanced and transfer of the cutting aged technology like biotechnology and robotics in agriculture sector needs to be strengthened among the FAO member countries in the region. The four-day FAO regional conference that started in Dhaka with the participation from 43 member countries on Tuesday will end tomorrow.
