Journalist Tanu in hospital after being handcuffed in police custody

Tanvir Hasan Tanu, the district representative of Jagonews 24.com, has been arrested in a case filed by the caretaker of Thakurgaon Modern District Sadar Hospital for publishing news that low-cost meals are being served to patients with corona.

He was arrested around 8 pm on Saturday (July 10). After his arrest, he was taken to the police station where he fell ill. He was later taken to Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital. Journalist Tanu is lying in the hospital after being handcuffed in police custody.

According to journalist Tanu's family, he recovered from Corona on July 5. However, he is still feeling physically ill. He is being given regular medication. In such a situation, they are worried about his health.

Thakurgaon Sadar Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tanvirul Islam said journalist Tanu suddenly felt physically ill. When the police officer in charge informed me, I decided not to send him to the hospital.

Choyan, a resident officer at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital, said he had recently recovered from Corona. So he has some shortness of breath and physical weakness. He has been kept under hospital observation.

The case was filed under the Digital Security Act on Saturday afternoon against three journalists, including Tanu, for publishing news about irregularities in the distribution of food to patients at Thakurgaon Sadar Hospital.

The caretaker of the hospital said. Md. Apart from Tanu, the other two accused in the case filed by Nadirul Aziz are Abdul Latif Litu, Thakurgaon district representative of Bangladesh Pratidin, and Rahim Shuvo, district representative of Newsbangla24.com.

In the statement of the case, the plaintiff mentioned, "Although there was a slight deviation in the supply of food for 2/1 days last June, at other times the food is being provided to the patients as per the government allocation."

The caretaker of the hospital claimed that after the news was published in various media outlets, he came to know about the information provided by the representatives of the contractors engaged in providing food to the hospital, the cooks of the hospital, and the serving of food to the patients.

In other words, after the news was published, he took three inquiries and came to know about the information of 'deviation in the supply of food for a day or two' in the hospital mentioned in the statement of case filed by him. However, the hospital authorities have not yet taken any action regarding the 'deviation in food supply'. On the contrary, he has filed a case against the journalists.

Meanwhile, as soon as the news of Tanu's arrest was received, the journalists staged a human chain and protest at the district press club premises demanding his release and withdrawal of the false case. They demanded the release of Tanu and the withdrawal of the false case of the caretaker of Sadar Hospital in the name of journalists.

Besides, the arrest of Tanvir Hasan Tanu has caused a storm of condemnation at all levels. Journalists protested at the district press club premises demanding Tanu's release and withdrawal of the case. Besides, social media has become turbulent.
